It is always interesting to us just how varied is the conveyor business in terms of applications and the industries we serve. For example, this month we are currently working on conveyor projects in the fashion retail market, the food industry and a conveyor system associated with the manufacture of security fencing products - quite a mix!
The fashion retail project involves a 25m long powered belt conveyor to operate as part of an overhead sack handling conveyor system we installed last year for a major UK fashion retailer. The conveyor will be suspended from the floor above and includes controls to allow operation of the conveyor in either direction. The conveyor will be handling individual packaged products of different sizes as part of an on-line order processing system.
For the food industry we are working on two new projects, both very different. The first involves a customised stainless steel powered belt conveyor for conveying waste material from a shell fish processing operation. The conveyor is approx. 9m long and fitted with a 450mm wide belt. The conveyor incorporates our new "non-spill" feature to ensure products stay on the belt. More details of this design concept will follow shortly on this website. For this specific application we had to move crushed mussel shells with a high water content from a crushing machine to an adjacent room for disposal.
The second food project involves our overhead cable conveyor (click on Products and Applications for more details). Although the cable conveying design is very well established, the application in this case is part of a new venture for our customer. We are co-operating with him to establish a pilot scale project as the first step in developing a full-scale facility for growing salad products vertically to minimise growing area. The conveyor will convey special carriers holding the products being grown and will be housed in a special building with a controlled environment. This project is in the very early stages and more details will follow as the project progresses.
The last application example covers a conveyor system handling heavy, hot pressings that are part of a production line for manufacturing the security fence product. The pressings are at approx. 80 degrees C as they exit the press and a specially selected belt material is being used for the application. The conveyor system includes belt conveyors and powered line-shaft type roller conveyors to move the product from the presses to despatch. Please see the photo of two of the belt conveyors awaiting delivery to site.
In summary, conveyors and conveyor systems provide a cost-effective solution to a wide variety of handling applications. The choice of conveyor and their specific design and that of the associated system need careful consideration at the planning stage to ensure the optimum solution is developed.
